Service
This semester I volunteered at Plenty farms. I woke up super tired and not that excited to be on a farm for the whole day. We drove to Floyd County, Virginia, basically the middle of nowhere, and drove up to this beautiful farm house overlooking fields of produce. My excitement began to increase slightly. Then we met farmer John. You could immediately see his excitement and passion for the farm and their goals. After John gave us an over view on what Plenty does we splits us into groups to help with the farm. My group was in charge of picking potatoes and I was pumped. There is nothing I like more than picking things out of dirt and feeling like I am one with the soil. I’m not sure how long we were doing it for, but I enjoyed every second of it. Occasionally when I wasn’t too concerned with picking more potatoes than Erica and Cameron, I would stop and take in the beauty. We were in the middle of nowhere. There were no cars, just some people that want to make a difference, trees, grass, and potatoes. It was truly breathtaking. After all the potatoes were picked, John took us around and told us about the farms history and the other programs they work with. After, we all gathered around a long table and ate chili that was made with produce straight from the farm. The table was filled so much laughter and friendship. As we started to reflect a light bulb went off. I realized that I had just experienced service learning. We served our community while learning about the issue and why the problem exist. It was truly an amazing experience. I hope to go back to Plenty in the spring and continue to serve the New River Valley.
